Refractive Surgery (Laser Vision Correction) The office of Melvyn D. Bert, MD, FACS has been on the cutting edge of Laser Vision Correction since its approval by the FDA in 1995-96. It is estimated that over 600,000 laser vision correction procedures will be performed in the U.S. by the year 2000. An alternative to contact lenses or glasses, and often a viable solution laser treatment has become the key to surgical success in the following areas of ophthalmology: Myopia: An error of visual focusing that causes difficulty seeing distant objects. With this disorder, near objects are seen clearly, while objects in the distance are blurred. This is the result of the visual image being focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused from the eyeball being too long from front to back, or from the lens power being too strong. Also referred to as "Nearsightedness." Astigmatism: A condition in which the cornea of the eye is asymmetrically curved, causing distorted vision. The cause of astigmatism is unknown. It is usually present from birth, may occur along with nearsightedness or farsightedness, and tends to remain fairly constant.
Hyperopia: An error of visual focusing that causes difficulty in seeing near objects. Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused from the eyeball being too short from front to back or the lens being too weak. Also referred to as "Farsightedness."
